MEN ON BOATS
WHO ARE THE PLAYERS?
By Jaclyn Backhaus
Directed by Rachel Solomon
WHAT'S THE DEAL?
“Off-the-canyon-walls funny.” — Variety
“Marvelously destabilizing both as history and theater. The stalwartness and selfishness of the adventurers – their cockiness and cluelessness – become biting satire when sent up by women.” — New York Magazine
WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT?
Ten explorers. Four boats. One Grand Canyon. Men on Boats is the true(ish) history of an 1869 expedition where a one-armed captain and an insane yet loyal crew set out to chart the course of the Colorado River. Inspired by John Wesley Powell’s actual travel logs, Backhaus’s nimble and ingenious script is provocative, laugh-out-loud theatre, infusing America’s historic myths of male conquest with a sly blast of satire. It’s a total testosterone fest— and all the men are played by women!
Content Warning: The show explores masculinity and Manifest Destiny, including the westward expansion into Native lands; it contains strong language; reference to war; and references to offstage death.
