THE AUDITION:
BY APPOINTMENT ONLY — please email info@blackfriars.org to schedule your appointment no later than Tuesday, November 17th at 12pm; scroll to the bottom for video submission information if you cannot make the initial audition date—we do not offer alternate initial audition dates.

THE NITTY-GRITTY:
Auditions will take place in two 60-minute groups. You will be assigned to a group at the time of your appointment request—we will do our best to accommodate time constraints. Please arrive having read the play, and be familiar with the characters. There is a link to a PDF of the script at the bottom of this page. For the audition, you will perform cold reads with a reader in the order in which you arrive and sign in.

Please bring a headshot/photo, resume, and your calendar to complete the rehearsal conflict calendar (YOU MUST FILL OUT A COMPLETE CONFLICT CALENDAR AT AUDITIONS).

THE PROCESS:
Rehearsals begin as early as January 31st, 2027
Tech: March 13-18 (NO CONFLICTS)
Shows: March 19, 20, 21, 25, 26, April 1, 2, 3, 4 (NO CONFLICTS)

*hold dates for added performances are March 20TH and April 3rd at 2PM (NO CONFLICTS)

Blackfriars rehearses 4-6 times/week on weeknights and weekends. We do not create a final rehearsal schedule until we have a full list of cast and crew conflicts after casting.

SYNOPSIS:
Two Latinx sisters guest star on an HGTV-style reality show to sell their family home in the rapidly gentrifying neighborhood of Hilo Villa. As they perform for the camera, one sister grapples with turmoil in the family’s ancestral past while the other learns how much she’s willing to sacrifice for the family’s future. What is the cultural cost of progress in America? And is cashing in always selling out?

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:

Casting 3W (5-7 actors total)—types clearly defined by playwright below. All roles will receive a one-time honorarium of $500.

PATRICIA - 30’s-40s, Latina, female | The older sister. A highly driven, pragmatic accountant (or financial professional) hungry for upward mobility. She spent the last two years nursing their late mother and sees selling their legacy home on the show as a lucrative financial launchpad.

JULIA - 20s-30s, Latina, female | The younger sister. A grounded, pregnant middle school teacher who is ambivalent about selling their multigenerational family home. She is deeply tethered to the ancestral roots of the house and experiences a surreal, psychological awakening during the home renovation process.

TESSA - 20s-40s, White, female | The upbeat, glossy television host of Flip It and List It, the reality show the sisters have signed onto. She embodies the gentrifier archetype, pushing the sisters to erase the cultural specificities of their home to appeal to a wealthy, White-buyer demographic.

FILM CREW - all ages/ethnicities | Seeking 2-4 actors to play the film crew of Flip It and List It. They do not speak to the other characters but have choreographed movement. They are a dynamic and almost constant presence on stage. They also serve as the “renovation” crew and create a stark contrast to the comfort and privacy of “sister space.”

VIDEO AUDITIONS

If you cannot make auditions and wish to submit a video audition, please submit to info@blackfriars.org no later than Tuesday, November 17th at 12:00 p.m. Please provide video of you performing TWO scene cuts from the script. Each selection should be no longer than one minute. You can perform two scenes as two separate character or choose two different scenes for the same character. Please keep the frame close enough to be able to see emotions (shots from the waist up are ideal); please have someone read off-camera with you (do not read a two-person scene by yourself as both characters).
