John Merrick was a real person who spent the years from 1886 to his death in 1890 in the London Hospital, Whitechapel.  His story has been told numerous times, in the memoirs of Fredrick Treves (1923), in Ashley Montagu's The Elephant Man (1971), in Leslie Fiedlerr's Freaks (1978), and in Frederick Drimmer's Very Special People (1973).  The model of St. Philip's Church that Merrick constructed can be seen today in the London Hospital.
