The Conservatory at Blackfriars Theatre

Blackfriars Theatre offers three semesters of multi-disciplinary classes and seminars, designed for all interest and experience levels. Classes take place at both Blackfriars Theatre and The Rochester Brainery. Please double check the location of your class.

FALL SEMESTER 2019

The Musical Theatre Audition I: How to Win a Callback Looking for a solid prep for college auditions? The Rochester audition scene? Your family holiday dinner? This two-part intensive will give you a laboratory to work your pieces, and learn valuable do’s and don’ts in the audition room, explore audition etiquette and the keys to confidence. Please come prepared with two memorized 32-bar selections. No prerequisite, accompanist provided. Ages 16+ [instructor permission required if outside these criteria.]

  • Two Day Workshop: Sunday, Oct. 27 and Sunday, Nov. 3 | 10am to 1pm

  • Students: 8 minimum | 10 cap

  • Fee: $100

Acting One: Acting for All Ever been curious about an actor’s process? Ever been told you belong on stage? Looking to gain some new skills or raise the bar of your training? This course provides a foundation of acting skills and techniques. This class will approach acting as inherently improvisational, based on the truth of the moment, and particular emphasis will be placed on tapping into the actor’s authenticity and immediacy through in-class exercises with partners. Students will be encouraged to have fun, take risks and work closely with each other. This work leads to in-class performances of selected monologues and scenes. No prerequisite, though this class is a prerequisite for several intermediate classes. Ages 16+  [instructor permission required if outside these criteria.]

The Performance Companion: PETER AND THE STARCATCHERTake a deeper dive into the world of the play before seeing the Blackfriars Theatre production. Engage in a behind-the-scenes conversation with the director and Blackfriars artists, delve into themes, designs and artistic choices while sharing your interest and excitement for the upcoming production. Workshop includes a copy of the play and a ticket to the production. (If you’ve already purchased a ticket, please contact Blackfriars for a reduced class rate.)   You must read the play prior to the class. No prerequisite. Ages 16+  [instructor permission required if outside these criteria.]

  • Single Workshop: 2 hours, date in Nov. TBD

  • Students: 8 minimum | 12 cap

  • Fee: $65
